Powering peace through climate action

Where drought, shrinking grazing routes and resource competition feed conflict, climate response and peacebuilding have to arrive together.

Powering Peace through Climate Action is International Alert's project in Sokoto and Benue States, built on a simple observation from the field: the same pressures that dry up land and water are the ones that push farmers and herders into competition, and competition into violence. Climate adaptation and conflict prevention are one agenda.

On 12 February 2026, the Sokoto State Government and International Alert Nigeria inaugurated the Project Steering Committee for the project's second phase, formalising the partnership between the state and the peacebuilding programme Dr Udo directs.

The wider programme

The project sits alongside International Alert Nigeria's broader portfolio, including RECAP in Sokoto, which supports peaceful dispute resolution, livelihoods and access to services. Funders across the portfolio include the European Union, Irish Aid and UK FCDO.
